General planning information. Your procedure, anesthesia, recovery, and results depend on your health and treatment plan. Returning to work does not mean full healing.

About the procedure

Liposuction uses a cannula through small incisions to remove subcutaneous fat. Common treatment areas include the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, and under the chin. The setting and anesthesia depend on the treatment extent and your health.

Liposuction is not a weight loss treatment and does not remove visceral fat around internal organs. It does not reliably correct cellulite, stretch marks, or loose skin. Removing fat can make existing laxity more apparent. Maintaining a stable weight helps, but the remaining fat and surrounding tissues continue to change.

Good candidates

  • Localized fat pockets that resist diet and exercise
  • Good skin elasticity in the treated area
  • Within a healthy range of your ideal weight
  • Areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, or neck

Candidacy is confirmed at your consultation. Dr. Huson will tell you honestly if a different approach would serve you better.

What to expect

  1. Your consultation

The consultation reviews your goals, medical history, medications, nicotine use, and examination findings. Discuss alternatives, the proposed setting and anesthesia, realistic changes, costs, and the support you will need during recovery.

  2. The procedure

Tumescent fluid numbs the area and limits bleeding. Through tiny incisions, a slim cannula removes the fat in a pattern that sculpts the contour rather than simply reducing it.

  3. Recovery

Bruising and swelling can last for weeks. Garments and activity restrictions depend on the area and volume treated. Return to gym training should be based on clearance rather than a fixed date.

Risks and limitations

  • Uneven contours, persistent loose skin, altered sensation, and fluid collections can occur.
  • Infection, damage to deeper structures, blood clots, and anesthesia or fluid-balance complications are possible.

This is not a complete list. Your clinician should explain the risks of the specific procedure and anesthesia, including bleeding, infection, healing problems, and any medical factors that change your risk.

Other options

Weight management addresses overall weight and internal fat. A lift or tuck may suit loose skin. Chest fullness in men may need glandular tissue evaluation rather than liposuction alone.

Planning your consultation

Bring your medication list and relevant medical history. Ask about the facility, anesthesia team, follow-up, time away from work, and help at home. Request an itemized estimate covering the procedure, anesthesia, facility, and any additional care; confirm coverage directly if insurance may apply.

Common questions

Bring the rest to your consultation. There is no such thing as too many.

Can the fat return?

The removed cells are gone, but remaining fat can enlarge with weight gain. The contour also changes with aging.

Will loose skin tighten?

Some contraction may occur, but loose skin can remain or become more noticeable. Skin removal may be more appropriate for significant laxity.

Can liposuction remove internal abdominal fat?

No. It treats subcutaneous fat beneath the skin, not visceral fat around internal organs.
