General planning information. Your procedure, anesthesia, recovery, and results depend on your health and treatment plan. Returning to work does not mean full healing.

About the procedure

Breast fat grafting transfers your own fat after liposuction from a donor area. It may suit patients seeking a modest change or correction of a contour difference who have enough donor fat and appropriate breast health assessment.

Retention varies, and additional sessions may be needed. A specific cup size increase is not predictable. Fat transfer does not reliably lift a substantially drooping breast. Fat necrosis, oil cysts, and calcifications can cause lumps or imaging changes; tell your breast imaging team about the surgery and have new lumps evaluated.

Good candidates

  • A goal of modest volume or contour improvement
  • Appropriate breast health assessment
  • Enough donor fat to harvest
  • Acceptance of variable retention and possible repeat treatment

Candidacy is confirmed at your consultation. Dr. Huson will tell you honestly if a different approach would serve you better.

Before & after

What to expect

  1. Your consultation

The consultation reviews your goals, medical history, medications, nicotine use, and examination findings. Discuss alternatives, the proposed setting and anesthesia, realistic changes, costs, and the support you will need during recovery.

  2. The procedure

Fat is harvested with liposuction, purified, and injected into the breasts in many small passes so the cells gain a blood supply. Donor areas are contoured in the process.

  3. Recovery

Both breasts and donor areas can bruise and swell. Retention is evaluated over several months. New breast lumps or imaging changes need assessment rather than being assumed to be normal graft changes.

Risks and limitations

  • Fat necrosis, oil cysts, calcifications, infection, and uneven volume can occur.
  • A new lump or imaging finding can require further tests or biopsy. Donor sites have liposuction risks.

This is not a complete list. Your clinician should explain the risks of the specific procedure and anesthesia, including bleeding, infection, healing problems, and any medical factors that change your risk.

Other options

Implants offer different volume options but require device monitoring and may need future surgery. A lift is considered for drooping. Neither is necessary if the tradeoffs do not fit your goals.

Planning your consultation

Bring your medication list and relevant medical history. Ask about the facility, anesthesia team, follow-up, time away from work, and help at home. Request an itemized estimate covering the procedure, anesthesia, facility, and any additional care; confirm coverage directly if insurance may apply.

Common questions

Bring the rest to your consultation. There is no such thing as too many.

How much volume can be added?

The change is usually modest and depends on available donor fat, tissue capacity, and retention. A cup-size increase cannot be guaranteed.

Can it affect breast imaging?

Yes. Fat necrosis, cysts, and calcifications can require further imaging or biopsy. Tell the imaging team about your surgery.

Will I need another session?

Possibly. Some fat is absorbed and additional treatment may be considered once healing and volume have stabilized.
