General planning information. Your procedure, anesthesia, recovery, and results depend on your health and treatment plan. Returning to work does not mean full healing.

About the procedure

Breast augmentation increases volume or changes proportions using an implant, fat transfer, or both. Planning considers chest width, tissue coverage, skin quality, asymmetry, and the size of change you want. An implant pocket and a fat injection technique are different procedures.

Augmentation alone may not correct substantial drooping; a breast lift may be considered separately or together. Surgery can affect nipple sensation and breastfeeding. If you choose implants, discuss long term monitoring and the possibility of additional operations as part of the decision.

Good candidates

  • Small breasts or volume lost after pregnancy or weight change
  • Asymmetry between the breasts
  • Good skin tone with minimal sagging
  • Fully developed breasts and stable health

Candidacy is confirmed at your consultation. Dr. Huson will tell you honestly if a different approach would serve you better.

Before & after

What to expect

  1. Your consultation

The consultation reviews your goals, medical history, medications, nicotine use, and examination findings. Discuss alternatives, the proposed setting and anesthesia, realistic changes, costs, and the support you will need during recovery.

  2. The procedure

Implants require creation of a pocket through an incision. Fat augmentation instead harvests fat with liposuction and injects it into selected breast tissues. A combined plan uses both methods.

  3. Recovery

Breast soreness, swelling, and tightness are expected early on. Restrictions depend on the implant or fat transfer plan, your job, and healing. Ask when lifting, driving, exercise, and sleeping positions can change.

Risks and limitations

  • Implants can rupture, develop capsular contracture, shift, or require removal. Changes in nipple sensation and breastfeeding can occur.
  • Rare implant-associated cancers and reported systemic symptoms need discussion alongside infection, scarring, and the possibility of further operations.

This is not a complete list. Your clinician should explain the risks of the specific procedure and anesthesia, including bleeding, infection, healing problems, and any medical factors that change your risk.

Other options

Fat transfer may suit a modest volume change when donor fat is available. A lift addresses drooping rather than volume alone. You can also choose no surgery after comparing the tradeoffs.

Planning your consultation

Bring your medication list and relevant medical history. Ask about the facility, anesthesia team, follow-up, time away from work, and help at home. Request an itemized estimate covering the procedure, anesthesia, facility, and any additional care; confirm coverage directly if insurance may apply.

Common questions

Bring the rest to your consultation. There is no such thing as too many.

Above or below the muscle?

Each position has tradeoffs involving tissue coverage, implant visibility, movement, and recovery. The choice depends on anatomy and the device.

Can nipple sensation change?

Yes. Temporary or permanent changes can occur after augmentation.

Can I breastfeed after augmentation?

Some patients can breastfeed, but surgery can affect milk production or sensation. Discuss future feeding goals before choosing an incision or technique.
