General planning information. Your procedure, anesthesia, recovery, and results depend on your health and treatment plan. Returning to work does not mean full healing.

About the procedure

A chin implant adds projection by placing a shaped implant against the lower jaw through an incision beneath the chin or inside the mouth. The material, dimensions, and placement should fit the existing bone and soft tissue.

An implant changes chin contour but does not correct a dental bite problem. Some concerns are better assessed for jaw surgery or a procedure that moves the chin bone. Fillers offer a temporary alternative for selected changes, though they do not predict an implant result exactly. An implant can require later revision or removal.

Good candidates

  • A small or receding chin
  • A profile that feels unbalanced with the nose
  • A weak jawline despite a healthy weight
  • Patients who want a lasting change over repeated filler

Candidacy is confirmed at your consultation. Dr. Huson will tell you honestly if a different approach would serve you better.

What to expect

  1. Your consultation

The consultation reviews your goals, medical history, medications, nicotine use, and examination findings. Discuss alternatives, the proposed setting and anesthesia, realistic changes, costs, and the support you will need during recovery.

  2. The procedure

A shaped implant is placed directly on the bone through a small incision inside the mouth or in the crease under the chin. Sizes and shapes are chosen to suit your anatomy.

  3. Recovery

Swelling, tenderness, and numbness can last beyond the first weeks. Diet and oral care restrictions depend on the incision. Avoid pressure or impact to the chin until cleared.

Risks and limitations

  • An implant can shift, become infected, feel noticeable, or need removal.
  • Numbness, asymmetry, visible scarring, and an unwanted contour are possible.

This is not a complete list. Your clinician should explain the risks of the specific procedure and anesthesia, including bleeding, infection, healing problems, and any medical factors that change your risk.

Other options

Selected patients may consider temporary filler or bone repositioning surgery. A bite or major jaw alignment concern should be assessed separately. An implant is not necessary simply because the chin is small.

Planning your consultation

Bring your medication list and relevant medical history. Ask about the facility, anesthesia team, follow-up, time away from work, and help at home. Request an itemized estimate covering the procedure, anesthesia, facility, and any additional care; confirm coverage directly if insurance may apply.

Common questions

Bring the rest to your consultation. There is no such thing as too many.

Will the implant feel natural?

Many patients adapt to the implant, but edges, firmness, or discomfort may be noticeable. Placement and tissue coverage matter.

Is filler a nonsurgical alternative?

Filler can change selected chin contours temporarily. It has injection risks and does not reproduce every change an implant can make.

Can chin surgery be combined with rhinoplasty?

Sometimes. The chin and nose affect profile balance, but each operation has separate risks and limitations.
