General planning information. Your procedure, anesthesia, recovery, and results depend on your health and treatment plan. Returning to work does not mean full healing.
About the procedure
Submental liposuction removes fat beneath the chin through small incisions. It can improve contour when superficial fat is the main concern and the skin has enough elasticity to adapt.
It does not treat every cause of neck fullness. Loose skin, muscle bands, a small chin, or deeper neck structures may need a different approach. The remaining fat can enlarge with weight gain, and aging continues. Compression and activity restrictions depend on the treatment plan.
Good candidates
- A double chin that resists diet and exercise
- Good skin elasticity under the chin
- A blunted angle between chin and neck
- Patients who want a defined profile without a full neck lift
Candidacy is confirmed at your consultation. Dr. Huson will tell you honestly if a different approach would serve you better.

What to expect
Your consultation
The consultation reviews your goals, medical history, medications, nicotine use, and examination findings. Discuss alternatives, the proposed setting and anesthesia, realistic changes, costs, and the support you will need during recovery.
The procedure
Through a tiny incision beneath the chin, the fat is numbed and then removed with a slim cannula. The area is sculpted to reveal the jawline.
Recovery
A support garment may be recommended, and bruising or swelling can remain after you return to desk work. The contour develops over months. Follow activity restrictions and report increasing swelling or pain.
Risks and limitations
- Uneven contour, persistent loose skin, bleeding, and infection can occur.
- Numbness or nerve injury, scarring, and the need for another procedure are possible.
This is not a complete list. Your clinician should explain the risks of the specific procedure and anesthesia, including bleeding, infection, healing problems, and any medical factors that change your risk.
Other options
A neck lift may be more appropriate for loose skin or muscle bands. Selected patients may discuss an injectable fat reduction treatment, which has different limitations and may need multiple sessions.
Planning your consultation
Bring your medication list and relevant medical history. Ask about the facility, anesthesia team, follow-up, time away from work, and help at home. Request an itemized estimate covering the procedure, anesthesia, facility, and any additional care; confirm coverage directly if insurance may apply.
Common questions
Bring the rest to your consultation. There is no such thing as too many.
Will the skin sag afterward?
It may, particularly when elasticity is limited. Liposuction does not reliably treat loose skin.
Can fullness return?
Weight gain can enlarge remaining fat cells, and aging or other neck tissues can change the contour.
How does this compare with injectable fat reduction?
Injection and surgery have different indications, risks, treatment schedules, and recovery. Discuss whether either fits the cause of fullness.
