General planning information. Your procedure, anesthesia, recovery, and results depend on your health and treatment plan. Returning to work does not mean full healing.
About the procedure
A neck lift addresses sagging skin and, when needed, the platysma muscle beneath it. Liposuction can reduce superficial fat but cannot reliably tighten loose skin or correct prominent muscle bands. The consultation separates these concerns so the proposed treatment matches the cause.
Incisions may sit around the ears and under the chin, depending on the operation. A facelift can be considered when the jawline and lower face also need treatment. Neck surgery leaves scars and requires recovery; neither skin contraction nor a specific degree of definition can be guaranteed.
Good candidates
- Fullness under the chin that resists diet and exercise
- Loose skin or vertical bands on the neck
- A blunted angle between chin and neck
- Non-smokers in good health
Candidacy is confirmed at your consultation. Dr. Huson will tell you honestly if a different approach would serve you better.

What to expect
Your consultation
The consultation reviews your goals, medical history, medications, nicotine use, and examination findings. Discuss alternatives, the proposed setting and anesthesia, realistic changes, costs, and the support you will need during recovery.
The procedure
A neck lift may remove excess skin and adjust the platysma through incisions near the ears and under the chin. Liposuction is added when superficial fat contributes to fullness.
Recovery
Swelling and bruising are expected, and altered sensation may persist as healing continues. A support garment may be recommended. Recovery from liposuction alone differs from recovery after muscle work and skin removal.
Risks and limitations
- Bleeding, delayed healing, skin loss, and visible scars can occur.
- Nerve injury can affect lower lip movement. Numbness, asymmetry, and further surgery are possible.
This is not a complete list. Your clinician should explain the risks of the specific procedure and anesthesia, including bleeding, infection, healing problems, and any medical factors that change your risk.
Other options
Submental liposuction may address localized fat when skin elasticity is suitable. A facelift treats associated jowls. Neither creams nor added volume reliably correct substantial loose skin.
Planning your consultation
Bring your medication list and relevant medical history. Ask about the facility, anesthesia team, follow-up, time away from work, and help at home. Request an itemized estimate covering the procedure, anesthesia, facility, and any additional care; confirm coverage directly if insurance may apply.
Common questions
Bring the rest to your consultation. There is no such thing as too many.
Do I need a facelift too?
Not necessarily. Jowls and lower facial sagging may make a combined approach useful, but isolated neck treatment may fit other patients.
Will the skin tighten after liposuction alone?
Skin may contract when elasticity is good, but the amount is not predictable. Loose skin or muscle bands often need a different treatment.
Where are the scars?
The location depends on the operation and may include the area around the ears and a crease under the chin. Scars can remain visible.
